What?
We’ve JUST moved to New York, New York.
Yes I am having a little sing song in my head right now and yes I do need to specify which New York because in the North East of England, near Newcastle Upon Tyne, is a place called New York (fun fact… there is also a Washington) and I didn’t want to confuse my lovely Northern friends.
Who?
Me and my fiancé, Ed (Edward, Ted or Tedward as well, he answers to all).
Why?
The first answer is because my smarty pants of a fiancé has just finished his PhD and has been offered a Post Doc position at Columbia University in New York. So, having been together for over eight years I saw no reason why I shouldn’t piggy back on his good fortune and go along for the ride. I didn’t exactly earn this fabulous once in a life time opportunity but I am super excited to grab onto it with both hands and not let go.
The second answer is WHY NOT?
Where?
Yes, I know I’ve already said New York, New York, so why did I include this question again? I promise only a small part of the reason was because I’m so excited and want to say it over and over and over… but actually another good question is…
Where are we going to live?
Ted is dead set on living in Manhattan and to be honest I am too, however, that will mean making sacrifices with our living arrangements. Those of you who know us well might be aware of our lovely flat in Newcastle and are secretly having a little laugh at the idea of us living in a shoe box apartment.
There are certain places in Manhattan where Ted’s New York love affair originated and in our dreams we find somewhere on the Upper West Side where I can pop out for a jog in Central Park (because in New York I’ll be the healthy, energetic version of myself I’ve been swearing to be… for 10 years!) and we’ll be amongst the fancy lawyers walking their dogs. I’m going to move on quickly so I don’t have to embrace the reality…
When?
NOW! As of yesterday we officially moved to NYC! For a loooooong time it was ‘just before Christmas’, ‘by the end of January’, ‘February/March-ish’, ‘Please let it be before April’ etc. In fact, I wrote the first draft of this post on Sunday 21st February with NO DATE in mind. But now, I can officially say it…
We have moved to NYC! And now that we're here, it still feels like a dream.
